Design week - brush up your wardrobe in Second hand shops and Designer fairs

Budapest is no Milan in terms of design, but we try to make up for this on the autumn DesignWeek from the 1st of October till the 10th. Models walk up and down the catwalks, studios open up to the public for a few days, special open air expositions can be admired all through the city and you can shop with discounts in designer shops!

And by the way, who needs that expensive, bubble gum design stuff in general? In Budapest, heart of Hungary, we like to balance on the border between design and second hand, trash can be stylish, stylish can be vintage, elegant can be funny and surprising. Budapest is not full with top designer shops, but if you woud really like to, you will bounce into one of those shops, where a special world opens up to you.

Besides, we have a cozy community of artists and designers who usually hang out for beers together and you will often encounter situations where you here: "Oh, this earrings are made by a girl who was the ex girlfriend of my exboyfriend's friend".

Talking of earrings, for ultimate Budapest fans a must:

It should not surprise you, checking the list of the designer shops participating on the Design Week, that half of them are crammed in Király utca (street). This street is well worth a visit also for those hunting for Humgarian designer clothes and objects.(for more details on Király utca, check a former post about it).

I would suggest you another quarter, namely that of Kálvin tér (square) in the heart of the university district. If you aren't sure where to go, just follow some wandering student girls, they will lead you to their treasure boxes. Within a few meters, you will find the best second hand in town (Ruhagaléria), oriental alternative shops where the owners bring everything directly from their trips in Asia (Iguána, Bahia, A bolt) and one of the favourite shops of young women: Barack (literally meaning peach). I think there is no girl among the university students who has not been dreaming once in a while of finally finding an occasion to buy and tailor a dress on herself from Barack. The dresses are slightly extravagant, not cheap for your early twenties' pocket but they will make you the enchanted queen of the night, guaranted attraction.

Last but not least, on a Sunday morning, set out for the WAMP DESIGNER FAIR. There will be one this Sunday, 10th October at gödör, and check the homepage for the actual dates. Chat with the craftsman and woman, the young designers and meet witg the real magyar style!
