Splash and cheers – Drink fröccs first and go to bed with a Lángos in the stomach.

Fröccs is the splashing sound in Hungarian of the water. However, it is more important that it is the ultimate summer booze here. It is no big deal, white wine with sparkling water. There is small (kis fröccs with 1:1 wine-water proportion), big (nagy fröccs 2:1) and so called „long step” (hosszú lépés with 1:2) – so you see, almost a repertoire of cocktails. My guider duty makes me tell you, to the great disappointment of the Spanish: we also have „calimocho” (in Spanish), VBK (in Hungarian) – cock with red wine. However, is rather preferred by  teenagers, fröccs is slightly more elegant, a refreshing booze on the hot summer days.

Fröccs is usually the second word foreigners learn in Hungarian, after sör (beer), and no wonder: it  is good stuff! It can go well on an elegant boat dinner, as well as at a concert, or at a quite night-out with your local budapester friends. After a few fröccs and sör, our traveller friends usually dare to give their third word in their Hungarian vocabulary a try: EGÉSZSÉGEDRE! Cheers! Salute! Yeah, come on, it is not so terrible, everybody learnt it till now, you won't make an exception.

Drinking too much wine, as it can easily happen on a budapester evening, upsets the stomach. It is not healthy to eat before going to sleep, but having a late night snack after the party helps to have nice dreams anyway. Budapest is great because it is full with 24 hour shops and open-till-latenight buffet-s – so you will never ever worry about food, drink or cigarettes.

LÁNGOS ( is one of the most traditional options to grab a greedy snack: it is a kind of deep fried flat bread, usually with sour cream (tejföl) and cheese (and garlic is the secret ingredient ☺). It is cheap, warm and tasty. It is absolutely anti-diet food, but a huge pleasure eating it. Strangely, it is especially popular at occasions when you would expect lighter food to be served: we, magyars, like to eat it at our beaches, for example, Lake Balaton and, as i just explained before, after some fröccs on summer nights.

Best places to eat Lángos in Budapest: Blaha Lujza Tér (at the side of the Corvin) and the Central Market Hall (upper floor).
It will look trashy and suspicious...

.. but once you taste it... just loot at Miguel :) he enjoyed it.

Ps: if you worry about mixing wine with water, no need. we have great wines which are drunk crystal clear - just like Jose did, a Spanish friend. You can see he likes it :)
