Ever heard of a traditional/modern Hungarian tapas bar? Neither did I, until, with the help of Underguide, I discovered the wonderfully refreshing ‘Pesti Disznó’ , and a new-yet-traditional interpretation of Hungarian gastronomy.
Located right in the centre of Budapest, Oktogon, just off Andrássy Utca, Pesti Disznó offers traditional Hungarian cuisine, in a non-traditional manner. Where traditional Hungarian dishes are heavy or filling, the dishes offered here are light and easy to eat. This little tapas restaurant really gives meaning to the term ‘quality over quantity’, and it was the perfect location for Underguide monthly training session held for the guides, with the most appropriate topic at hand... gastronomy!
Walking into Pesti Disznó was in itself an experience. The walls surrounding the open kitchen were filled with a huge selection of wine and pálinka, and the fresh food and friendly staff made themselves apparent, almost immediately.
After we all found our seats, we were greeted with an introduction as to what makes Pesti Disznó different to any other restaurant in Budapest - small portions, not too filling, only fresh ingredients, classic Hungarian Gastronomy yet in a unique way...
The food was beautiful... We indulged in goose liver with pálinka, sheep's cheese with potato, marinated catfish with pickled vegetables... all made fresh right there in front of us!
We could really see and taste the creativity, and I speak for everyone when I say we could truly feel this new concept of Hungarian Cuisine Tapas, or as Chef Tamás Bereznay (who is the author of various gastro books and has been amongst other the chef of the President's Office) explained, they were 'falatkák' (which means 'bite-sized' in Hungarian). While dining here, it was easy to feel like we were part of something new, that we were experiencing the beginning of something wonderful, and that we were in the presence of a true Hungarian Pioneer...

Overall, the atmosphere was, for lack of a better word, perfect. The chef encouraged you to be comfortable, to do what you want, eat how you like, and act how you feel... the waiters were beyond courteous, and their english was great. I am more than happy to recommend Pesti Disznó to both tourists and locals alike, as in my year of living in Budapest, it was one of the most delightful and refreshing gastronomic discoveries of my entire time here!
Check out their daily menu (990Ft the normal one and 1390 Ft for the XL size) on their facebook page, or just pop in anytime for a magyar tapas and a nice wine.
