Imagine the early 1990s, barely after the democratic transition, rendszerváltás (systemchange) how we call it. Imagine the underground movement of this period and their most beloved meeting place. This place was called Tilos az Á (meaning literally "The A is forbidden" after the famous trespassing sign from Winnie the Pooh - it is the Hungarian version of "No T") till it got closed by the authorities in 1995. Now it reopened. Frank Zappa had a concert there 20 years ago and Tuesday my little sister's band, the Vadabadas played here as well.
After its closure, a new bar opened, Frank Zappa Café (by now you should guess why it is called like this :) ). It is on our most Mediterranean square, I already told you about Lumen Gallery, so it is well worth taking a coffee or beer here even without knowing the glorious underground past. Huge murals on the walls, a little stuck in the past but never out of fashion, Zappa Cafe guarantees a joyful evening.
Now Tilos az Á, the cult name got revived! It is the basement part of Zappa Cafe, you have to go down down till there is no phone connection and you can only connect with the people in the halfdark room.

Perfect place for a not-yet-famous-but-very-beloved-by-friends band's concert, don't you think? My sister is one of the singers :) They were really cool, jazzy and funky. The only nuisance was the half zombie barman with a cool haircut who was so slow that you died of thirst till your beer arrived. Friends of friends, beers in hands and dancing around. A happy birthday suddenly, a big ball jumping around and the frenzy joy of the Vadabadas musicians that they really managed to cheer the club up.
Maybe Zappa started in places like this.
